L’Hôtel de la Marine est le lieu occupé par la Kriegsmarine (~juin 1940 - août 1944).

La mission principale que tenta de remplir la Kriegsmarine durant ce conflit fut de couper les lignes de ravitaillement du Royaume-Uni dans ce qui fut appelé la seconde bataille de l'Atlantique principalement avec sa flotte de sous-marins (U-boot) et de tenter de stopper les convois de l'Arctique à destination de l'URSS ;

En France, durant l'occupation, la Kriegsmarine recruta des Français :

  • environ 30 000 ouvriers, manœuvres... dans les chantiers navals, les ports, les bases de sous-marins...
  • 200 hommes dans le Kriegsmarinenewerftpolizei (KWM) qui est une unité de police.

Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Kriegsmarine se rendit coupable de crimes de guerre. Notamment en prenant une part active dans la persécution et l'extermination des juifs dans les pays baltes (aux massacres de Liepāja, à Šķēde par exemple).
