A former industry in Hamilton was the manufacture of cast iron stoves. One of the largest was the E. C. Gurney foundry. This was located on the south east corner of John and Rebecca and stretched all the way to Catharine and King William streets, virtually covering the entire block.

Founded by the American brothers, Edward and Charles, the company quickly expanded to five locations, the elaborate Toronto Gurney foundry building is standing today on King West.

E. C. Gurney was an early buyer of pig iron from the Hamilton Blast Furnace Co. Today known as Stelco. E. C. Gurney and Labour had many clashes over union rights, work conditions and wages
