This old Japanese woodblock oban print by Ichiyōtei Yoshitaki (1841–1899) entitled 'The Border Crossing' from the Rustic Genji series, 54 chapters, originally printed 1869. Yoshitaki was based in Osaka from the 1860's - 80's and was the most prolific designer of kabuki prints of his time. Kabuki is a classical Japanese theater style known for its highly stylised performances.
This example is a 19th century reprint. Depicted are two male kabuki actors dressed as women - a practice which began in 1628 with the introduction of yarō-kabuki (all male kabuki) The 11th c. “Tale of Prince Genji” (Genji Monogatari) is sometimes called the oldest novel in the world. The work was written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting in the imperial manor who lived in the Heian period. This could well be page 16.
This old print has been reframed by our skilled team in the UK in a simple matte black wood frame. A similar example can be found at the Ritsumeikan University. There appears to be a small amount of rubbing next to the artists signature (see photos).
