Painted Takhat Table From Gujarat - 19th Century

This fabulous coffee table is known as a "Takhat" - a style of daybed found in Northern India. This piece is an excellent quality example of a traditional Gujarati takhat where the sides are excellently carved in the traditional Gujarati style and featuring a wider, shorter and squatter leg in comparison to the more common and taller Shekhawati takhats. These daybeds were used by the wealthy merchant classes in India. 

Traces of the original lacquer and paintwork still remain on the legs and beading, giving this piece a wonderful quality. Gaps between planks have been sealed with rope in the traditional way. The teak wood has also developed a rich patina over the years.
