One of New Zealand top showjumping riders and trainers, Vicki Wilson is no stranger to the spotlight. Riding since childhood, she's claimed more awards At The New Zealand horse of the year show than any other rider, and won the 2014 world cup. A passionate advocate for equine welfare, she travels the world educating audiences about training and equine bodywork, and dazzling audiences with her bareback stunts. Vicki and her sisters, accomplished equestrians Kelly and Amanda, share a passion for horses that's taken them on a journey around the world taming wild horses and advocating for new Zealand kaimanawas, America's Mustangs, and Australia's brumbies. Talented in and out of the saddle, their work with wild horses was featured in their NZ television show, keeping up with the kaimanawas, two documentaries filmed and directed by Amanda, and several books written by Kelly! Vicki’s work starting horses from all different backgrounds earned her a spot in 2017's road to the horse (troth). the troth is an exciting three-day Colt starting competition that follows top-level trainers as they train an untouched 3-year-old quarter Horse to saddle, and vie for the title of World champion of Colt starting. Vicki selected boon River lad, a Colt sired by cutting horse boon San and bred by the legendary 6666 Ranch of Guthrie, TX. Vicki fondly nicknamed the Bay with a big white Blaze ‘Kentucky. ’ at first it seemed that Kentucky's cautious personality and Vicki's dislocated shoulder might hinder their progress, but the pair took everything in stride and persevered, making Vicki the first English rider and new Zealander to win the competition! Vicki credits her victory to giving Kentucky a strong foundation and building up the cautious horse's trust. When he showed fear of a new obstacle, she's dismount and they'll walk through it together. At their next pass with her in the saddle, he'd go through With confidence. That trust continued to shine during their freestyle routine that included jumping bareback! Like the majority of the troth winners before Her, Vicki purchased Kentucky after the competition and brought him home to new Zealand where he helps to integrate new stock into her stable, and at clinics and demonstrations. Returning to compete in the 2018 troth, she again won the world Champion of Colt starting title, making her the only Woman to have won the competition twice!
