Belgium medal Knight Order of Leopold I ‘L'Union Fait La Force’

Nice enameled medal for a Chevalier (Knight) of the Order of King Leopold. Not a wartime medal.

Depicts a silver and white enamel Maltese cross with ball tipped finials, with a gilt, green and amber wreath of oak and laurels between the arm.

The face with a circular central black enamel medallion with a gilt lion rampant of Belgium encircled by a red enamel ring inscribed with the Belgian motto, "L'Union Fait La Force" (Strength through Unity) within a beaded border.

 The verso has a central black enamel medallion with the monogrammed gilt letters "LR" for "Leopold Rex" within a red enamel ring.

Magenta ribbon and rosette (original with medal?), Faded and some fraying.

On front, missing some of the red enamel around ‘L'Union Fait La Force’

The Order of Leopold is one of the three current Belgian national honorary orders of knighthood. It is the oldest and highest order of Belgium and is named in honour of its founder; King Leopold I. It consists of a military, a maritime and a civil division. The maritime division is only awarded to personnel of the merchant navy, and the military division to military personnel. The decoration was established on 11 July 1832 and is awarded by Royal order.
