Blaye est une commune du Sud-Ouest de la France, située dans le département de la Gironde en région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Ses habitants sont appelés les Blayais.
Durant des siècles, Blaye fut un point de passage particulièrement commode pour qui venait du nord et se rendait à Bordeaux ou plus au sud, vers l'Espagne et le Portugal1. Fortifié depuis l'antiquité, ce site d'une importance stratégique régionale avérée n'a été modernisé qu'à la fin du xviie siècle, sous l'égide de Vauban. C'est en effet en 1685 que le commissaire général des fortifications de Louis XIV proposera la construction d'un véritable verrou sur la Gironde pour « se rendre maître de la rivière » et tenir Bordeaux en respect « s'il lui arrivait de faire la bête ». C'est alors que sera construite la citadelle de Blaye qui constitue l'élément majeur du dispositif de contrôle de l'estuaire.
