Join us for a special typewriter event in honor of Letter Writing Month! Write a letter (or several) on a typewriter and get inspired to step away from the distractions of digital life. With a restored vintage typewriter for each participant to use and a goodie bag of stationery to keep, enjoy the clatter of these beautiful machines and craft letters to loved ones.
This workshop is hosted by friend of the shop Michelle Geffken and her daughter Abigail, a mom and teen duo pursuing an analog life amid the urgency of digital distraction. They’ll share their typewriter collection, give two brief talks, and help participants get oriented on the typewriter.
Michelle is a published essayist, nature artist, and typewriter collector who loves to help others pursue time offline. She writes at paperblogging.com. Making time to create offline has been life-giving for Michelle. She will outline the appeal of writing on a typewriter and answer questions about using her restored manual machines.
Abigail is a homeschooled high school senior who loves ancient languages, typewriter poetry, cats, and friends and is a prolific letter writer. At age twelve, Abigail gave herself a challenge to write two letters a week. Her project was surprisingly impactful! She'll describe the obstacles that caused her to give up on her goal and how she overcame them to joyfully connect through letter writing again.
Free drop-in time from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm: After the workshop, there will be a free walk-in period for anyone who is interested in exploring the typewriter collection. (Please note that we can’t guarantee there will be a typewriter free for everyone during the drop-in time.)
