In this six-part workshop, Prairie Owl Beads will take you through the step-by-step process to make a pair of modern slipper moccasins.
What will you learn?
- One-needle beadwork;
- Designing your beadwork pattern;
- Tracing and cutting leather;
- Sewing leather;
- Aligning and assembling your leather pieces.
Everything to make a complete pair of moccasins from start to finish (and be able to make more in the future should you wish!).
This workshop provides a fun and welcoming environment, where stories will be told, and laughter will be shared. Join us for an interactive and engaging session, connecting with others and leaving with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned crafter, this workshop is open to all! Just a friendly heads-up: some experience with sewing and/or beadwork will be helpful to keep things on track. Participants are expected to attend all sessions to complete the project, and a bit of 'homework' may be required to ensure everything is finished on time!
Supplies:
Included:
- Needles
- Thread/sinew
- Beads
- Moccasin pattern
- All tools necessary
Not included:

These materials are not included as the participants will get to customize their moccasins to their liking! Participants can:
A. Purchase their own leather. Details of how much is needed will be outlined during the
first session. We will also provide a list of places where they can be bought in
Winnipeg. Participants should have them bought by the second session.
B. Purchase leather at the second session from a seller that will be brought in. Costs
and options will be discussed at the first session. The cost varies depending on the
foot size being made.
C. Bring their own leather already on hand to the first session. We will evaluate together
whether it can be used.
Your options for these materials will be thoroughly discussed during the first session.
About Prairie Owl Beads:
The four Desrochers sisters—Julie, Danielle, Gabrielle, and Roxane—are French Métis,
raised in Saint-Boniface. With over a decade dedicated to honing their beadwork skills, they
have deepened their connection to their Métis roots, culminating in the founding of Prairie
Owl Beads in 2020. The sisters celebrate the cultural significance of beadwork as a vital
form of storytelling and self-expression, honouring their heritage and ancestors. Through
engaging workshops and demonstrations, they share their passion and expertise with the
community, inspiring others to reconnect with their own roots. Prairie Owl Beads embodies
their collective journey as artisans, seamlessly blending traditional techniques with a modern
touch, while fostering a strong sense of community and cultural pride.
