Pilote et constructeur d’avions, Henry Farman a installé son atelier en Champagne, en bordure d’un camp militaire près de Châlons-Champagne. Ses Biplans Voisin à moteur Antoinette d’Henri Farman allient puissance et légèreté. Ils privilégient l’efficacité sur la sécurité.
Au début de l’année 1908 les pilotes maîtrisaient encore assez mal leurs appareils, ils décollaient et tentaient de rester en l’air le plus longtemps possible mais sans pouvoir décider d’une destination.
Enfin Henri Farman se sent prêt à tenter la réalisation de son rêve : Décoller de sa base de Châlons en Champagne pour atteindre la ville de Reims …
Durant les 10 premiers mois de 1908, les vols d’avion sont expérimentaux et se limitent à des « tour de piste », avec un champ d’action limité aux seuls abords de la zone d’envol.
Le 30 octobre 1908 ne pouvant supporter plus longtemps les limites étriquées des pistes balisées, visant des horizons plus lointains, Henri Farman tente un extraordinaire vol depuis le camp de Châlons en Champagne vers la ville de Reims. Il ne s’agissait plus, comme dans d’autres cas, de décoller simplement pour se laisser porter au gré des vents et arriver le plus loin possible. Il décide de diriger son appareil vers une destination précise choisie avant l’envol : le domaine Pommery à l’entrée de Reims.
Après seulement à peine plus d’un quart d’heure de vol, Farman atterrit à Reims dans le champ de la cavalerie contigu du Domaine Pommery. Le trajet d’environ 27 km est réalisé à 40 m d’altitude en une vingtaine de minutes, soit une vitesse moyenne de l’ordre de 80 km/h.
Ce sera le 1er vol mondial de ville à ville.
