AZO photographic paper used dates photo to 1946-1940.

Au printemps de 1912, un voyageur anormalement civilisé fait halte à Péribonka, petit village situé au confluent de la rivière du même nom et du lac Saint-Jean. Cette espèce de survenant, Français de surcroît, n’est nul autre que Louis Hémon, journaliste fasciné par les mœurs des défricheurs et ayant décidé de se fixer dans la région pour y puiser l’inspiration d’un éventuel roman.
Avant de partir quelques mois plus tard pour l’Ontario, où il mourra frappé par un train, Hémon se fait engager à la ferme de Samuel Bédard et laissera le souvenir d’un travailleur maladroit mais discret, dévoué à ses hôtes. Lors d’une veillée, il fait la connaissance de la sœur cadette de Mme Bédard, Éva Bouchard, une jolie maîtresse d’école qu’entoure un cercle de prétendants assidus. Le même soir, Hémon se fait raconter l’histoire tragique d’un coureur des bois mort en forêt l’hiver précédent, récit qui semble troubler la jeune Éva… Il tient enfin le sujet de son livre.

Maria Chapdelaine is a romance novel written in 1913 by the French writer Louis Hémon, who was then residing in Quebec. Aimed at French and Quebec adolescents, the book had been included in school curricula, translated, and has been extensively analyzed and adapted.
Hémon, a journalist, came to rural Quebec to gather ideas for a novel. He supported himself by working on a farm. After hearing various stories from area residents, he wrote a romantic story, basing the character of the heroine on a young woman he had met. In 1913, he submitted the manuscript for publication; he then left Quebec to travel to western Canada, but was hit by a train and died before learning of his book's success.
