1915 WW1 letter from Canadian private 2nd CMR in Belgium to Enderby B.C.

Letter from Private Patrick Ker Mowat of the 2nd Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles #107423.

He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery, citation on 1917-01-06.

Patrick was a bank clerk in Enderby BC. He was 18 when he enlisted in December 1914, and had previous service with the 30th BC Horse. He arrived in England on 21st June 1915.

Dear Mrs Martin
I want to thank you and Jim ever so much for that box of candy which reached me safely a few days ago We are not used to such luxuries over here and it certainly was fine.
I am getting on fine here and have not had a very hard time yet. A troop of my squadron is attached to the Engineers and I’m one of them but the rest of the 2nd(?) are in the trenches now and are not having quite so easy a time as last.
The weather is pretty bad to say nothing of the --- which is lovely don’t quite know how we would get on without it. I think Jim will be glad to hear that Col. Bott is now our act. Brigadier. The 2nd Regt. men are all pleased about it. I will have to stop now so with best Christmas wishes to you all I am

  • Left Montreal 12 June 1915 aboard MEGANTIC.
  • Arrived in England 21 June 1915.
  • Strength: 28 officers, 605 other ranks.
  • Arrived in France 22 September 1915
