He was born in 1899 in Naples, Italy, and later moved to the United States.
Patania settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and established a jewelry shop in the 1920s. He is often credited with incorporating traditional Native American jewelry techniques into contemporary designs, creating a distinctive blend of Native American and European aesthetics. His work was characterized by the use of silver and turquoise, as well as intricate stampwork, repoussé, and other metalworking techniques.
One of his notable contributions was the development of the "Thunderbird" design, which became iconic in Native American jewelry. He also introduced innovations like the "Patania Button" for clasps and closures, which simplified the process of putting on and taking off jewelry.
Frank Patania Sr.'s work had a significant impact on the evolution of Southwestern jewelry, and he influenced subsequent generations of Native American and non-Native American jewelry artists alike. His legacy continues through his family; his son, Frank Patania Jr., and other descendants have carried on his artistic traditions. The center stone measures around 3/16" x 3/16".
