Deux photos prit à Stalag 1A ~1942-44.

Photo #1: PG belges, prit dehors au camp Stalag 1A (clôture barbelée dans l’arrière-plan). Les soldats brandissent des pancartes où il y a écrit "LE DIFFUSEUR". Un soldat porte un chapeau avec le même nom.
À la gauche du soldat “L” est le docteur Albert Paquay (voir ci-dessous).
Sur le revers, il y a un tampon de censeur: 'Stalag 1A 79 Geprüft'.

Sur le revers, il est ecrit en encre ‘Comite organisateur du journal “Le Diffuseur” ' et un tampon de censeur: 'Stalag 1A 79 Geprüft'.

 

Le Diffuseur fut le journal des prisonniers belges du Stalag IA de 1942-1944. 

“…Puisque l'on vient de faire état de ceux qui purent rentrer au pays, il faut citer le cas admirable d'Albert PAQUAY, qui fit, lui, le trajet inverse.
Albert PAQUAY, mobilisé en 1939, n'avait pu, pour cette raison, terminer sa dernière année de médecine. Fait prisonnier sur la Lys, il est dirigé dans un Oflag, mais il obtint de rentrer en Belgique pour y terminer ses études.
Cela étant réalisé, pour respecter une promesse faite en quittant l'Oflag, il rejoignit volontairement le Stalag IA et y fut, jusqu'au bout, le seul médecin belge du camp…”

Le Stalag IA, situé en Prusse Orientale, près de Preussische-Eylau, était le plus oriental des camps de prisonniers de guerre. Le camp était de "Stablack" pour les prisonniers, mais de "Görken" pour les Allemands. Stablack est le nom de la gare dans laquelle arrivaient les prisonniers qui prirent l'habitude d'utiliser ce nom, et c'est ce nom qui est resté, au moins pour les Belges et les Français.

Photo #1: Belgian POWs, taken outside at Stalag 1A camp (barb-wire fence in background). The soldiers are holding cards that spell out “LE DIFFUSEUR”. Another soldier is wearing a hat wit the same words.
To the left of the “L” soldier is the doctor Albert Paquay (see below).

Le Diffuseur was the newspaper for Belgian POWs at Stalag IA from 1942-1944. 

“…Since we have talked about those who could return to their country, we must mention the admirable case of Albert PAQUAY, who did the inverse journey. 
Albert PAQUAY, mobilized in 1939, was not able, for that reason, to finish his last year of medical school. Taken prisoner on the Lys river, he was sent to an Oflag (prisoner of war camp for officers only), then released and allowed to return to Belgium to finish his studies.
This completed, to respect a promise he made on leaving the Oflag, he voluntarily went to Stalag 1A and was, till the end, the only Belgian doctor of the camp…"

Stalag IA was a German prisoner-of-war camp located near the village of Stablack, about 8.5 km (5.3 mi) north-west of Preußisch Eylau, East Prussia (now Bagrationovsk in Russian Kaliningrad Oblast).

End 1939 some 47.000 Polish POWs were registered at Stalag 1A. Most of them have left the camp in 1940 and 1941. End May 1940 the first Belgian POWs arrived, soon followed by French prisoners. In 1940 some 23.000 Belgian and some 35.000 French prisoners were registered in the camp. In 1941 arrived another 2.500 French and about 1.000 Russian prisoners. Most prisoners would stay till the end of WW II.
