Rosewood Brass Studded 'Zanzibar' Chest From Kutch - 19th Century

This Indian studded rosewood chest dates to the 19th century and is a small 'Zanzibar chest'. These chests were made in The Rann of Kutch and used as dhow trade chests for transporting spices like pepper and cloves, Indian cottons, gemstones. Diu, Surat, Basra, Zanzibar & Bombay were the main trade hubs. This chest was sourced directly from Kutch. 

 

The chest is decorated with brass studs and corners. It has ironlifting handles on the sides as well as an interior candle box. Over years of continued use, some of the studs have worn away.
