Four page letter with Patriotic letterhead ‘Our Army and Navy forever, Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue’. Image of sailor, with flag, shield, cannon, eagle, ship,etc..

Date appears to be October 4th 1862. Not signed, but says to direct letters to 16th Regiment Camp Dennison Ohio.

Letter is written in phonetic English and is hard to decode:

Camp Denison
Dear friend…to rite you a few lines to let you know --- that I am well and hoping these few lines will find you injoying the – Blessing. We are going to leave Satorday fore Durton for Memphis tensasse We ar going to  --- and then we git on the Steamer and go rite throw to the rigmetn there is 8 hundred sick solders --------------------------------------------------------------//
I haf not much to – rite so often I wont you to take a Weak when you rit to me as it will well make a – man to letter down there; will take a weak to git a letter dow there – haf Bear. Well ever sins I haf bear in ---, rite to me and let me now all the pertoklers—We – a blos and lots of clothing We haf ar ------ We drow ar guns at the Sitty I tell you – We git to be a good cal We had a big time the nite We came in camp We slep in the cars and the durn things I cud not //

Sleep in them it was full and between the Seats Where We --- was full laying on the dirty flower Well – I sopose you and the teacher is all rite you must rite in the next letter how the -Olron is giting along with his school I wont forget the times We had last Winter at the Old School hous ---- obrother Be With you to nite talking to you then expressing words to you  throw the Silent agency of --- I hope We Will git to gether again and haf som more of ar old times //
Milton rockheld went off and ant back yet he will haf to  -- 5 minits from the time he reports ---- his way throws --- leave home a weak with out wonton home he got a copel of letters of – Darland and that set him crasey if – made that is sad that she wod give me gass you can rite  -- time the letters will  -- ous out dist direct them to the 16 rig Camp Denison & now rite often. When I git downto them old rebel Stats I will haf sumthing to rite .We will be nine days on the road//

Camp Dennison was a military recruiting, training, and medical post for the United States Army during the American Civil War. It was located near Cincinnati, Ohio, not far from the Ohio River.

With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, George B. McClellan, commander of Ohio's state militia, was charged by Governor Dennison with selecting a site for a recruitment and training center for southern Ohio, a possible target for the Confederate States Army due to its Ohio River location and proximity to slave states such as Kentucky and Virginia, from which invasions could be launched…The land was on both sides of the Little Miami Railroad (LMR) tracks, which ended at Cincinnati's Public Landing.

The LMR could transport volunteers from Central Ohio, and from areas along those tracks…

More than 50,000 Union soldiers were mustered in or out of service at Camp Dennison. As many as 12,000 occupied the camp at any one time.
